Thursday April 11th
4:30 - 5:00 pm Check-in
5:00 - 5:30 pm Get to know the Artist -Slide show and discussion about teaching creativity
5:30 - 9:00 pm Mixed Media in the elementary classroom
-Creating textures and patterns, producing unique and original collage materials, introduction to “Values”.
-Hand-out distributed.
-Discuss the uniqueness of learning, personalizing education
Friday April 12th
9:00 - 12:00 pm Mixed Media project (how to create mixed media)
-Define mixed-media and possibilities of various resources, materials, supplies and equipment
-Experiment with materials and start producing more collage materials
-Exploring the art of productivity
12:00 - 1:30 pm Lunch on your own
1:30 - 5:30 pm Mixed Media cont.
-Introduction to design and composition with aid of slide show of master pieces and students’ art projects
-Build compositions; create variations of compositions in black and white and utilizing a variety of values (3-5 values)
-Translate color to values, creating color textures and patterns
-Create compositions in color with collage materials you have created or exchanged with others
-Short critiques and evaluations of progress interspersed as needed
-Discussions about subject matter and inspiration
-If a photocopy machine or printer is available, copies can be made to exchange for others to “adjust” your compositions…
5:30 - 7:00 pm Dinner (we can do potluck or dinner on your own)
-Enjoy, share and discuss!
7:00 - 9 pm Critique of work completed so far, finish up any work
-How to make critiques effective and helpful, managing the format of helping students get something from a critique and feel comfortable with sharing.
-A critique is a form of creativity and allows more possibilities

-Talk and share about “process” and individual progress and challenges

Materials to bring to retreat
-Any rubber stamps and ink pads you may have -Permanent markers, black and any colors… -Liquid drawing inks, black and any colors… -Regular pencils, ball-point pens, crayons, color pencils, color makers -Textured wallpaper (to be used to make rubbings) -To be cut or torn as collage material: old watercolor paintings, printmaking, drawings, rubbings, photocopies of your original photographs, original photographs -Various interesting art papers of various colors, patterns and texture -A sketch book/notebook for taking notes, documenting your innovative ideas, and sketching out ideas |
Materials Provided
-Brushes for inks and acrylic paints… -White mat board (11x14” or smaller) -Acrylic paints -Water container for cleaning brushes -Acrylic matte medium -Copy paper (lots of paper to be drawn on, marked on, painted on…) Scissors to cut paper -X-acto knife and blade(s) -Glue sticks (acid-free) |
